What is 5G (5th Generation) Technology? How it works? When it will come in India? Everything you need to know about 5G.

5G TECHNOLOGY

Hi Friends!

As I promised, I'll make a dedicated blog on 5G. So it's here!
I've talked about previous mobile generations in the last blog if you haven't gone through that blog so, read it from here- Evolution of Mobile Generations.

Let's accelerate it!

The 5G upcoming mobile technology is yet to come. It is expected in 2025 in India, while in some European countries and the USA, it is introduced in a few developed cities only for testing and research purpose. It is the successor of 4G. Checkout 5G Map.

See, 5G isn't about data speed only, although data speed is the main highlight, there are many more features.

What's new in 5G?

  1. The latency will decrease, latency is the time lag between your command and response from the server, in simple words, there'll be less buffering, loading, and response time will be faster.
  2. There will be a drastic change in the network bandwidth, in short, network capacity will increase, the number of devices connected with cell tower won't affect internet speed and coverage.
  3. The data speed will be around 1-10 Gbps.
  4. The network coverage will be 100% due to many small cells.
  5. Enhanced battery life for IoT devices for eg- all smart gadgets and devices.
  6. Security and privacy of devices will also increase.

How it works?

5G is based on the foundation of 5 brand new technologies.
Let's talk about them one by one!

1. Millimeter (mm) Wave-

As the name suggests, it is a small range, high-frequency wave with greater bandwidth that is going to make 5G superfast. As it offers greater bandwidth means that network capacity will be awesome, so that more numbers of peoples can be connected at the same time. Let me give you an idea of mmWave- suppose a situation in which a large mass at the shopping complex streaming videos in 4K all together, mmWave will work best in such a situation.                                                                                                                                                    Millimeter (mm) Wave

2. Small Cell-

The mobile towers which you're seeing in your surrounding will no more when 5G will come. These mobile towers will be replaced by small cells, a kind of small cell tower/antenna. As the range of mmWave is short, that's why more number of cells will be required to install. They are so small that they can be easily installed on street lights, traffic lights, trees, rooftops, building terrace, etc.

3. Massive MIMO-

MIMO stands for Multiple Input Multiple Output. This technology will group the antennas (as transmitter and receiver) together to provide better functionality and output. It multiplies the capacity of the antenna. The image below is self-explanatory.

Massive MIMO

4. BeamForming-

This is really an excellent technology that sends or provides service to the targetted users at a time. Targetted user means that those people who're currently working or active on the network and those who aren't working won't get network at that time. The cell will monitor and analyze it accordingly. This will really optimize the network to a greater extent.

5. Full Duplex-

Today's base stations and cellphones completely rely on transceivers, transceivers are the device which can both transmit and receive data. With the help of 5G, transceivers can both transmit and receive on data at the same time on the same frequency. This technology can double the wireless transmission and can make it more smoother for the devices to communicate over the network.

What can be expected from 5G?

  • We can see self-driving cars running on the road, all cars will be connected to each other via the 5G network. so, that traffic will be smooth and faster than usual, fewer chances of an accident and everything will be automated, you just have to give a command.
  • Remote surgeries will be possible everywhere around the world, specialized doctors and surgeons can do surgeries remotely from anywhere in the world just by giving commands to robotic arms, and this will increase the success rate of surgeries.
  • Cloud Gaming will become reality, basically, it is a type of gaming in which you don't need to have a high-end PC because the game runs on the server rather than on your PC. And this requires a strong internet connection with minimum latency so that there will not be any frame drops.
  • As the data speed will be super-ultra fast so that you can download a movie, a game of 3-5 GB in seconds.
  • Videoconferencing will become like you're really there, you'll get super sharper images and video quality.
  • Usually, whenever we watch live streaming or telecast and attend live classes, meetings, there is a lag of 5-6 seconds, this lag won't be longer further.
  • Everything on the internet will go very smoothly just like butter without any lag, frame drops, buffering, you'll experience virtual reality.
As we know, if there are merits of something then there are demerits as well.
Have a glance at them!

Problems associated with 5G-

  • As the frequency of mmWave is high, but the range is low, so, this will require a larger number of cell towers to be set up, ultimately the cost of installation will increase drastically.
  • There will be more radiation than earlier because the number of cell towers is increased, Continuous exposure to high electromagnetic radiation can affect the brain and cause serious health issues.
  • Old devices won't support 5G, we've to buy a 5G smartphone to operate the network, and those smartphones will be expensive, everyone can't afford it, and also they are in a limited number.
  • The price of the Internet data plans will increase significantly, this won't be in the range of current plans.
  • The infrastructure including its spectrum, cell towers, cables, etc will cost high, we can't expect 5G in developing countries too early, it'll surely take a significant amount of time.
  • This technology is very new, most of the country is not competent with this technology especially developing ones.
  • This technology is under testing and research, will require time to become perfect.
I've covered all this thing related to 5G to the best of my knowledge.
